Quercus rubra is a fast growing, upright tree usually with a single straight stem and a huge billowing top. The bark is silver-grey and smooth like beech. The leaves are large, up to 22cm, dark green turning red or orange-red in autumn. Eggshaped, 2.5cm large acorns in broad flat cups. Tolerates dry soil, drought and air pollution, performing best in acid to neutral soil. Hardy. Flat far-reaching roots.
