Deciduous. A compact magnolia ideal for smaller spaces. Flowering is later than for most magnolias, with the first flush appearing with the emerging leaves in May or June when danger of night frost has passed. Flowers are narrow and fluted in bud, deep purple outside, opening to reveal creamy-white stained purple insides. The shrub continues to flower intermittently through the summer. Best in a fairly light, permeable soil, ideally slightly acidic. Tolerant of clay and pollution.
