Originally from Japan and introduced in 1879, this curious maple resembles a hornbeam, but the opposite leaves and winged fruits (samaras) reveal otherwise. Upright when young, the habit widens with age, becoming beautifully fan-shaped. The tapered oval leaves mid-green in summer, turning gold and brown in autumn. Great on all well-drained soils. H6
