Evergreen. A unique, prehistoric-looking tree with long spidery, branches armour-plated with spines. Curious pineapple-sized cones are produced in the highest branches when mature. Extremely slow growing (perhaps 1-2 inches per year!) so although ultimately a very large tree, Araucaria can be considered as a small tree for most practical purposes. Introduced to this country in 1795, the peculiar Araucaria became very fashionable in the Victorian age, which perhaps explains why enormous Monkey Puzzle trees are often seen growing in the tiny front gardens of victorian terraces.
