The River Birch is grown for its red-brown shaggy, curling bark becoming black or grey-white on older trees, and its abundance of long golden catkins in early spring. Its crown matures to a loose, graceful, round shape. Excellent as a multi-stem specimen planted where the details of its bark and catkins can be appreciated. Best in a sheltered, moist to wet position, avoiding frost pockets. Modest yellow autumn colour. A shallow rooting tree
