In spring and summer this shrub is fairly inconspicuous, making its sudden autumn transformation all the more remarkable. The green, ovate, finely toothed leaves turn brilliant red accompanied by purple seed pods, cracking open to reveal bright orange seeds. The bark is also attractively winged, hence its name. One of the very best shrubs for autumn interest. Excellent on alkaline soils. H6
