A very large growing tree, originally from North America, introduced to Britain in 1656. Traditionally valued for its deep, chocolate brown wood of very high quality, but increasingly enjoyed as an ornamental tree due to its dark bark, highly aromatic leaves and dark, edible walnut fruits. Grow in any well-drained calcareous soil in full sun. Hardy. Moderate to fast growing. A deep rooting species.
