A large, fairly slow growing tree grown for its edible walnuts, aromatic leaves and imposing crown, which is more irregular and rounded than that of its cousin the Black Walnut. Long male catkins are produced after the appearance of the leaves each spring. Begins producing tasty, edible walnuts when the tree is about fifteen years old. Best on well-drained lime-rich soil. A deep rooting species.
