One of the few deciduous conifers, the Japanese Larch provides an interesting alternative to the usual broadleaf autumn colour options. In spring, the new foliage emerges a fresh uplifting lime green, catching the sunlight and contrasting the small reddish brown cones. In summer, the foliage mellows to a dark sometimes bluish green. In autumn, the tree turns a vibrant golden yellow, completely unexpected for a conifer. The needles then fall to leave a haze of greyish red branches through the wiinter. In youth, the tree is fast-growing, exuberantly sprawling, arching, pendulous. Growth slows as the tree matures, ultimately forming a large tree with a broadly conical habit and a fairly open, semi-transparent crown. Deep rooting. H7
