A classic ornamental evergreen, valued primarily for its large glossy green leaves which have contrasting russet undersides, and also its large but sophisticated cream coloured flowers which appear in late summer. Furthermore, the grandiflora species will tolerate dry, alkaline soils. Requires shelter. May drop leaves in severe winters. RHS hardiness rating: H5
