The classic English cooking apple. A sturdy variety which tolerates a wide range of sites, including wet conditions (though not waterlogged soils). A heavy cropper given good pollination, but sometimes bearing biennially (in alternate years). Flowers in March with fruit ready for use in November. For best cropping, plant in proximity of at least two other mid-season flowering varieties (Pollination group B). Often existing apple or even crabapple trees growing nearby will suffice, or varieties which flower just slightly earlier or later (groups A or C), such as 'Rode Boskoop', 'Bolero', 'Holstein', 'Granny Smith'. Pollination Group B.
