A reliable and heavy cropper, producing a green apple with a brown flush. Sometimes a dessert apple, but more often used in cooking when grown in the UK garden, as this variety needs a long hot summer to produce dessert quality fruit. Considered by some to be partially self-fertile, it is more likely the tree is pollinated easily from trees growing at great distance, which means it is usually unnecessary to supply a partner to get good fruit set. Planting in the vicinity of other apple or crabapple trees which flower at a similar time (i.e. Hostein) improves fruit-set of all the trees. Season of use Jan-April Pollination Group B/C
