Deciduous. A stocky, broad headed, dense tree of rugged appearance. The unusual leaves can very between heart-shaped and deeply lobed, in varying patterns, on the same tree. Fruits are white at first, ripening to reddish-pink or nearly black, sweet and edible, though more insipid than those of Morus nigra. The tree plays a valuable and romantic role in history, having been cultivated to feed silkworms for silk production for over four thousand years.
