By some this is considered the most beautiful flowering tree. If protected from spring frost, in May this tree will produce large spikes of rich purple flowers, very similar to the foxglove. The growth habit is fast and sprawling, with an open crown and the wood is very light and pithy - easy to prune. The leaves are large, green, and downy, giving a tropical appearance to the foliage. Not a tree for a lover of formal gardening - you must be prepared to accept a degree of die back after harsh winters, and the irregularity of crown which results. Allowed this little freedom, and lots of sun, moist ground and protection, this tree will most certainly delight. Hardy.
