The London plane is a vigorous tree, recognizable by its smooth, marbled grey bark, large leaves, and bauble-like fruits which persist through winter and into spring. Since it is so amenable to pollarding, it makes an excellent choice for pleaching. Prune in early spring to rejuvenate and in summer to keep shape. Hardy.
