Native to China and Japan, this tree is most noted for its fragrant, fringed and bell-shaped white flowers borne in long pendulous clusters in early summer, reminiscent of epaulettes. Flowers are followed by ribbed fruits in drupes which persist through winter. Attrative ridged bark with age. Best in moist, well-drained acidic soil and full sun. H6
