Few oaks can withstand flooding and wet ground as well as this species. The bark is smooth and dark grey, eventually becoming lightly fissured after many years. The smooth leaves are glossy green in summer, less leathery than many of the oaks, which permits light to ilger through the broad crown. The leaves turn a rich brown or fiery-red in autumn. 5m tall at 10 years. Very hardy.
