Benjamin Franklin Shumard, the State geologist of Texas, was commemorated in the name of this North American tree in 1860. Starts growing in a vase shape but later becomes broad and round. Turns a vibrant orange/red in autumn. Foliage is glossy green, fairly large, deeply lobed leaves. Tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure. Hardy.
