A Dutch selection noted for its remarkable corky bark which is especially striking on the younger twigs. Purple-green flowers decorate the tree prior to the leaves emerging; these are followed by small, winged nutlets. Young leaves are rough and hairy, whilst the adult leaf is bare and glossy green.
