The story of Majestic Trees begins in sunny California almost 20 years ago, where our company founders, Steve and Janet McCurdy were at the time residing. Born and raised in Britain, Steve’s horticultural training had taken him to Southern California many years previously. There he had met his wife, Janet, and together they had built up a highly successful interior landscape company, servicing many prestigious hotels, high profile commercial buildings and celebrity residences in the entertainment and business world. In fact,by 2001, their company was the largest independent in Southern California and had amassed 93 national and state-wide awards, an achievement Steve and Janet attribute to their team’s commitment to quality, service and professionalism. By this time, however, a new business ambition was beginning to unfold.

 Years of planting large specimen container grown trees had led Steve and Janet to believe there was untapped business opportunity in the UK. In July 2000 they took the plunge and relocated the family back to the UK. The sale of their interior landscape business a year later helped to fund the purchase of a site in Hertfordshire: the future site of Majestic Trees.

The ambition for Majestic Trees was to tap unrealized market potential to grow, on speculation, mature trees in containers and to provide in-house advisory and planting services to facilitate their sale, thereby overcoming a significant obstacle to the growth of this market. To achieve this, Steve and Janet would craft a unique new company for the horticultural industry: a serious production nursery with the visitor-friendly ambience of a destination shopping experience; a closely knit, highly professional team whose commitment would be rewarded financially as the business grew; a bona fide horticultural grower who could service both the retail and trade market with equal versatility.

After over two years of careful planning, construction and growing-on of stock, our company, opened for business in May 2002. We hit the ground running, quickly establishing ourselves in the industry as a ‘nursery to watch' – albeit in many cases by the sly eye of the sceptics! Things took off quickly and by autumn 2002 we were pressing ahead with the development of the remaining 3 acres of our 12½ acre site. With the business growing rapidly over the next few years, we soon found acreage to be our biggest limitation, so in January 2008, after a record 38% growth the previous year, we purchased an adjoining 6½ acres and further expanded our production acreage, complete with a second reservoir for rainwater harvesting.

These early efforts were to be swiftly rewarded. In 2008, after just eight years in business, our peers awarded Majestic Trees with the coveted Nursery Stock Grower of the Year at the annual industry awards, making the company the youngest ever to win the award. Little did we know then that our independent nursery would again be honored with this award in 2011, 2015 and 2017, as well as twice winning Silver at the International Grower Awards in 2011 and 2016.

Since those early days the company has continued to steadily expand, buying additional land in 2012 and 2017. Our team has now grown to over 30 and they are, in Steve and Janet’s opinion, the key to Majestic Trees’ success. We have been very fortunate to attract a team of some of the brightest and best in the industry, and together they bring a tremendous amount of experience and training to the company, delivering an exceptional standard of ‘Quality, Service and Professionalism’.

The building of our Visitor Advice Centre in 2017 celebrates those high standards. With these facilities in place, we’re thrilled to now be able to host cluster groups for our industry’s trade organizations, seminars, training, and industry social events, as well as provide a pleasant and comfortable environment within which our employees, our customers and our industry colleagues can do business.
